Hydrophullon, seu Dentariae affinis ... - Colour printed mezzotint, retouched in watercolour by hand. Plate 588 from: Weinmann J.W., Phyntantoza Iconographia. Regensburg, 1737-1745. Plate mark: 33x21cm, sheet size: 43x28.5 cm.

Johan Weinmann (1683-1741) was the director of the longest established pharmacy in Regensburg. His "Phytanthoza Iconographia" is a vast work in eight folio volumes with over a thousand engravings representing several thousand plants. The work may be called the first successful botanical book using colour-printed mezzotint, a process which has been invented in the Netherlands by Johann Teyler around 1688. As practised here by B. Seuter and J. E. Ridinger, it was really a combination of etching and mezzotint, which made possible delicate lines and a very fine grain. The addition of handtinting brought about unusual and subtle effects. (Hunt)
