Amerique Septentrionale Divisée en ses Principales Parties. - Ottens R. & J., 1756.

Map of North America by Jaillot, published by Ottens with California as an island.

The map is derived from earlier work by Jaillot, namely his large map of 1674, but most probably through Mortier's own large version of it published in 1692. It bears the same ornate title cartouche along with another to frame the various national scales of distance. A separate running title appears above the neat line.
Sometime following Pierre Mortier's death there were several auctions of stock and materials. It is possible that during this period the Jaillot plates were sold off. They next appear in the hands of the Ottens family. Shortly after acquisition the imprint below the scales lower left is altered to include the imprint of R. & J. Ottens. (Bruden)
