Olaus Magnus was a Swedish ecclesiastic and author who was employed on various diplomatic services and became later archbishop of Uppsala. His Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus remained for a long time the chief authority on Swedish matters and is still a valuable repertory of much curious information in regard to Scandinavian customs and folklore.
