*** Rare Janssonius map of Asia with four decorative borders ***

Asia recens summa cura delineata. Auct: Iud: Hondio / Excusum in aedibus Joanni Janssonii Amstelodami 1623. - Janssonius J. ,1630.



Rare second state with imprint of Joannes Janssonius, decorative borders on four sides: Top border: Famagusta, Rhodes, Damascus, Jerusalem, Aden and Hormuz. Bottom border: Goa, Calcutta, Candy, Bantam, Gammalama and Macao. The figured side borders derive from the illustrations on Blaeu’s 1608 wall map.
This map belongs to a folio-sized set of the four continents by Jodocus Hondius. It must be assumed that Pieter van den Keere either engraved the set or commissioned it to be engraved. Van den Keere had remarried soon after 1622 and before long ran into financial difficulties, forcing him in 1623 to sell most of his copperplates. It is perhaps on this occasion that his nephew Jodocus Hondius Jr. purchased the newly engraved maps of the four continents for his atlases. It is assumed that Van den Keere did not print any copies from these copperplates once they were engraved. (Schilder)

After this edition, the bottom border was removed because the map was too large to fit in an atlas.
