First French edition of the famous Mitchell map, the map used for international treaties up into the 20th century.
This map summarized the geography of eastern North America and the territorial claims of the European colonial powers as seen from the English point of view. The boundaries of the southern colonies, for example, extend westward ad infinitum, clearly disputing the French claim to the interior of North America west of the Appalachian Mountains. Mitchell's map was the one, in fact, that British and American representatives used from the spring of 1782 until early in 1783 while negotiating the treaty that ended the American Revolution.
The edition offered here appeared in 1776 at the outset of the American Revolution in response to the French public's need for information concerning the theatre of conflict involving their longstanding enemy and future ally.

Copper engraving

"Henricus Hondius' beautifully engraved map of North America had greater influence than any other to date in perpetuating the theory of California as an island. This was because it was disseminated through the medium of his powerful Dutch publishing house. None of the earlier California as an island maps had reached such a wide audience. The 1630s where a decade of constant development in the houses of Blaeu and Hondius. It is interesting to note that Blaeu never produced a single sheet map of North America; both Willem and Joan relied upon that of the whole continent first produced in 1617, throughout their publishing history. During this decade Joannes Janssonius became an active partner of Hondius, and although this map bears no imprint it is assigned to the latter on the basis that at the same time a map of South America appeared displaying his name.
Cartographically this map is a careful composition of many different sources and illustrates well the current state of knowledge. The depiction and nomenclature of the west, along with that of the insular California, derive directly from the Henry Briggs The North Part of America, 1625. A legend placed strategically over the north-west coastline offers the opportunity to discontinue a coastline least understood. An unnamed lake still feeds a Rio del Norto flowing incorrectly south-west into what should be the headwaters of the Gulf of California. On the east bank of this river is Real de Nueua Mexico, or Santa Fe. The Gulf of Mexico and the Florida peninsula originate from the Hessel Gerritsz chart of c.1631.
The east coast, however, is harder to define; the south-east appears to be quite generic in form. It is the area north of here that does not appear to be from a particular source. The Chesapeake Bay area is defined in about as much detail as the scale and style of the map will allow, Iames Towne being clearly identified. NOVUM BELGIUM is unlike any other before it, the area between the Zuitt Reuier (Delaware River) and the Noort R (Hudson River) being greatly elongated on a north-east to south-west axis. New Amsterdam is curiously not designated although Fort Orange is present. For New England just a select few names have been chosen from John Smith's map of the area, 1616. The Gulf of St. Lawrence appears to follow de Laet more than Champlain. The latter is used to depict a single great Lake; however, its name, Lac des Iroquois, is borrowed from one nearby. Interestingly the author chose not use Champlain's more recent 1632 map but the earlier 1612 CARTE GEOGRAPHIQUE DE LA NOUVELLE FRANSE; To avoid unknown territory he does not venture the river system further west, unlike Champlain. Along the Atlantic coast of Labrador we find for the first time much Dutch Nomenclature, reflecting their increased whaling activities in these waters. Hudson Bay is clearly derived from Briggs, 1625, except for the west coast where he introduces the cartography of Thomas James, 1633. The addition of a fox here could be seen as a veiled reference to Luke Foxe, whose own map of the previous year bears just such an animal.

The map was one of many introduced in the late 1630s to be included in the rapidly developing Atlas Novus. After the death of Janssonius in 1664 the business was left to a number of different parties, and it could not be divided in such a way that ensured the continued production of the various atlases. During this period some of the maps were often sold to order; such as for the atlases of Nicolaas Visscher and Carol Allard. This map appears in such atlases unchanged until c. 1694. In that year Petrus Schenk acquired all of the Atlas Major plates at public auction from the heirs of Jansson van Waesberge, and began issuing the map with his own imprint." (Burden)

From: Gerardi Mercatoris - Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura.
Amsterdam, I. Hondius, 1619. (Van der Krogt 1, 1:113)

"This map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius for his first edition of Gerard Mercator's atlas. Intended to be a grand comprehensive work, with the first part originally appearing in 1585, by Mercator's death in 1594 only two parts had been published. Continued by his family, it was still incomplete for the 1602 edition, lacking most importantly a section on the Iberian peninsula. During this time it was also competing with the remarkably successful atlas of Abraham Ortelius which averaged almost one edition per year. By 1604 Jodocus Hondius was flourishing, and in that year acquired all of the plates from Mercator's descendant. He immediately set about engraving many new maps to augment and complete the work, amongst which was a set of the four continents. He also had the original text expanded by Petrus Montanus. In the following year he brought out Mercator's Ptolemy, and in 1606 his first edition of the general atlas which proved instantly popular, selling out within a year.
Right up until 1630 this attractive map was issued alongside the AMERICA sive INDIA NOVA by Michael Mercator, 1595. Since the text describing America was always used by the Mercator, this one is always lacking one. Produced on a stereographic projection like more and more maps of the time, it is an amalgam of various sources. It incorporates a more correct west coast of South America and narrows still further the longitudinal width of New Spain at the Tropic of Cancer, making it just 10°, much closer to reality. However, like all cartography before, it still retains an enlarged North American continent. A Plancius type depiction of Newfoundland occurs alongside a typical period representation of the east coast, with a more protruding Virginia than usual.Various scenes taken from the earlier volumes of de Bry's Grand Voyages adorn the whole. Particularly notable is the native Brazilian scene illustrating the method used to make a local beverage, derived from Hans Staden's voyage as recorded by de Bry. There are various galleons, kayaks and Indian canoes along with a pair of birds perched on the inset." (Burden)

This is one of ten maps in Bünting's Itinerarium, in which the author, a theological commentator, rewrote the Bible as an illustrated travel book. Other maps in the series bear out his imaginative approach to cartography, which pictures the World in the form of a cloverleaf, Europe as the Queen of the World, and Asia as Pegasus.

Double hemisphere, with corner portraits of J. Caesar, Cl. Ptolemy, G. Mercator & J. Hondius. Insular California.

"In 1629, threatened by pending competition from W.J. Blaeu and his sons, Jan Jansson and his partner Henricus Hondius set about revising the Mercator-Hondius atlas which (in respect of the world map) had continued unchanged for nearly thirty-five years. The partners' new world map is a fine ornate example of the decorative cartography of the time. The two hemispheres are bordered by voluptuous representations of the four elements and other scenes: in the top corners are portraits of Julius Caesar and Claudius Ptolemy and in the bottom corners are protraits of the author's father Jodocus Hondius and his mentor Gerard Mercator.
For geographical detail Hondius has followed Speed and his contemporaries and also presents California as an island. New features include part of the north Australia coastline extending towards New Guinea and a redrawing of north-east Canada with 'Queen Ann's forland' (Baffin Island) shown completeley encircled by open water.
The Hondius-Jansson world map had as a long a life as its predecessor, as it was included in all issues of the Mercator atlas from 1633 until at least 1658. Four states have been traced with dates on the map as follows:

State 1 1630
State 2 1641 with Amstelodami Excudit Ioannes Ianssonius added at the bottom
State 3 1663 in Atlas Contractus of Jan Jansson and in sea atlases of Van Loon
State 4 1666 in Atlas Major of Jan Jansson " (Shirley)
"Waldseemüller's large 1507 world map is the unackowledged source of Apian's map of 1520. Much detail has inevitably been left out but there is a close geographic correspondence, a similarity of woodcutting style, and the same truncated cordiform projection. There is no evidence that the much more up-to-date Carta Marina of 1516 has been used at all, and the marking of Calicut is the only hint of the great Portugese discoveries in the East.
Laurent Fries, whose initials appear in the lower right-hand corner, was probably the co-daughtsman or woodcutter: the twelve windheads and the decorative surround to the map are robust examples of woodcut work. The other initials are those of Johann Kamers (Camertius) in whose book the map apppeared and (in monogram form) L A or Luca Alatses who paid for the production of the map. Peter Apian, a professor of Mathematics in Vienna and Ingolstadt was also a geographic writer and publisher as well as cartographer. His text book Cosmographicus Liber first came out in 1524 and was re-issued for over eighty years. From 1544 onwards it often contains the world map of his pupil Gemma Frisius. Two years earlier, in 1522, Apian published a small treatise Isagore in typum Cosmographicum describing his new map of the world, inferred by Harisse to be an ellipsoidal world map (now lost) rather than the truncated cordiform one of 1520. In 1530 he produced another world map on a cordiform projection." (Shirley)

For many years, this map was thought to be the first map to use the name America.
